Amongst the items sadly damaged because of the fire in the church, were the two British Legion flags.

They date from between the two world wars, and are old, and not in the best condition, but are a precious piece of history. And they are paraded every year on Remembrance Sunday.
We are so grateful for some meticulous and painstaking work by Helen , who has protected the fragile material and prepared the flags for cleaning.

We are so fortunate that Karen then stepped in.
Karen, who trained at the Natural History Museum, London before going to work in museums, came home to France for ten days to put her expertise to good use, decontaminating and cleaning our Church’s “British Legion Standards”. After disassembling, lining, reassembling, and darning them, Karen has painstakingly, millimeter by millimeter gently and repeatedly, dabbed each thread, on both sides, with specialist “Smoke Sponges” to remove as much of the dirt from the fire as is possible without further damaging this part of our heritage.
Thank you Karen! Here she is at work, and we are delighted that the flags will be on display on Remembrance Sunday.
